RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
