‘It Completely Altered My Existence!’ The Way Youthful Rewilders Revitalized a Agricultural Property – and Began a Movement

The richly complex melody of the songbird is a rare occurrence in England these days, but it's different at this rural location. Four years ago, a single bird could be detected at this secluded location in rural Surrey; recently, they were all around. “We were hearing them singing all night, from several zones,” says Meg Cookson, chief environmental expert for the eco-activist organization. A band of participants were camping out at the site, yet the birds were so boisterous, “we couldn’t sleep all night,” remarks Layla Mapemba. “We were all knackered the next day, but it was so amazing.” An expert from the local conservation group came to help them capture and tag one of the nightingales the next morning, Cookson states: “He’d never touched a nightingale in his care before. He was crying.”

Ecological Restoration Accelerates at the Surrey Site

Rewilding is by definition a lengthy endeavor, but at this site at the farm, after only a short period, the results are already apparent, and noticeable. The farm used to be a haven for animals. Currently it’s a example for the youth-led mission: to accelerate habitat revival, in one of the most nature-depleted countries in the globe, and to link young people (18-30-year-olds) with a natural world they are often excluded from, and a climate crisis they are often powerless to halt. Global heating persists, habitat loss destroys wildlife homes, and another international meeting comes to a disappointing conclusion in abroad – so who could fault young people for wanting to take matters into their own hands?

Our initiative was founded on the belief that there were landowners prepared to allow a bunch of youthful idiots on to their estate

“The newer cohort is the most informed environmentally that there’s previously,” states the group's co-director, one organizer. They are also “the highly invested in the issues, and have added the smallest part to their origin, and, then, are also going to be affected the greatest as a outcome.”

Revitalization of the Property

Currently, the organisation is growing across the United Kingdom – and this location was the beginning, in multiple ways. “It’s our origin point, and the place we built our connections,” notes a founding member, as she gives a tour of the expansive land. “This was previously multiple separate areas,” she says, as we walk through tall vegetation filled with shrubs, surrounded by forest. “The key noticeable transformation is that we’ve taken out all the barriers, 1.2km of it, to make it feel like a unified area.” In the recent season, they used hazmat suits and removed large amounts of harmful weeds, an invasive species that can irritate the body. “We’ve introduced many of hedgerows,” notes Easton. “But the main thing is we’ve just allowed it to rest for a short time. We’ve removed a large part of animal feeding and noticed what’s emerged.”

Low scrub and natural fences are a perfect nightingale environment, she comments, but currently they’re managing some of the thorny plants to establish a greater variety of environments and to connect different sections of the property. New trees will take a while to establish, but new growth from the surrounding woodland are already taking root in the fields; the crew have been placing barriers to shield them from grazing deer.

Animals Comes Back in Droves

It’s not just the nightingales – fauna is reappearing in large numbers. This year they’ve observed serpents, creatures, bats and invertebrates, notes another co-director, as he raises one of their monitoring tools (such as a doormat over a indentation in the ground). “You discover creatures and animals sheltering under there, but it’s likely a slightly chilly for them now.” Wild beehives, made from empty parts of wood and buzzing with pollinators, are attached to some of the trees. The absence of livestock has provided insects space to prosper in the overgrown areas. When they explored this time, says Bennett, “I’d not once seen so many insects. There were just clouds of them. We were saying, ‘What is going on?’”

Beginnings of the Project

The initial founders – Noah, Jack, Easton and two others – came together as youth, studying or expressing an concern in ecology. In that year, the IPCC was indicating that the target of one and a half degrees of climate change was looking unachievable, Greta Thunberg was leading the school strikes for eco-awareness, and advocate Clover Hogan was addressing youth suffering from “climate anxiety”. It was also the time of Isabella Tree’s book, on rewilding, on how the authors revitalized the a Sussex location from a unsuccessful agricultural business into a successful wildlife haven. “We were super-inspired by the Knepp story, but what was the function for youth?” says Easton. “So we made a platform and called loads of conservation groups and were asking, ‘Do you sometimes get your property owners seeking to do something and you lack capacity?’”

Durant explains the story: “Our complete project was essentially based on the idea that there were individuals who were ready to permit a bunch of youthful idiots on to their property freely, to make major actions that would change land value
