Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such medications must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
