They're Repeating across America What They Did to Christianity

Trumpism's most revealing and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his plans for a gilded ballroom two times larger compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.

He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of deaths due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – truly, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.

We went from 'the meek shall inherit the world' toward 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As bewildering as it is to observe the chief executive try to upend the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group among Americans who should not find it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into a figure of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment within America might have little sense about him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably not the account of an authoritative monarch emerging; instead, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to evade undercover officers. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his message concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to turn the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your coat you should give him your sweater as well.

The apparent and direct fact that the Savior from scripture calls for a type of extreme compassion centered on the poor has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Highest of Us

Hence I have become encouraged to observe the persistent defiance against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners at every demonstration and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by reference to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by relationship to what makes it special and wonderful, which is the example of Jesus. In neither case does it mean feigning the most damaging about the nation and Christianity did not happen; it signifies both meekness and conviction, a mixture that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
