Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
